Electrical troubleshooting and repair in Austin, TX
When a breaker keeps tripping, an outlet goes dead or the lights flicker, the fix starts with finding the real fault. We charge a diagnostic fee to trace the cause, show you what we found, and then hand you optional, flat-rate repair pricing so you decide whether we proceed.
Electrical troubleshooting is the diagnostic work of tracing a fault back to its source before anything gets replaced. A repair then corrects that specific cause, whether it is a loose or backstabbed connection, an overloaded circuit, an open or shared neutral, a failed breaker, or a device that has worn out. We use the symptom, the circuit map and a meter to isolate the problem so you pay to fix the actual fault, not to swap parts and hope.
This is the right call if:
- A breaker trips the moment you reset it, or trips at random times through the day.
- An outlet or a whole section of a room is dead or only has half power.
- Lights flicker, dim or brighten, especially when a large appliance or the AC cycles on.
- You hear buzzing or crackling at a switch, outlet or the panel, or feel a warm outlet.
- A GFCI or AFCI breaker or outlet nuisance-trips and will not stay reset.
- Part of the house lost power but the main breaker is still on.
Troubleshooting & repair options
Tripping breaker and lost-power diagnosis
A breaker that trips is usually doing its job on an overload, a short or a ground fault, so we trace the circuit to find which one. We also sort out partial power loss, which often points to an open or shared neutral or a failed connection rather than the breaker itself.
Dead and half-dead outlet repair
A dead outlet frequently traces back to a tripped GFCI upstream, a backstabbed connection that has loosened, or a break in the circuit at another device. Half power at an outlet usually means a lost neutral or a bad connection, and we find the exact point before replacing anything.
Flickering, dimming and buzzing
Flickering and dimming can come from a loose connection, an overloaded circuit, a failing device or a utility-side issue, and the fix depends on which. Buzzing or crackling at a device is a sign of arcing at a loose terminal, which we locate and repair before it causes heat damage.
GFCI and AFCI nuisance-trip troubleshooting
GFCI and AFCI protection trips on real faults, but it can also trip on shared neutrals, moisture, or a worn device. We test the line and load sides, separate the circuits that were sharing a neutral, and confirm the protection holds before we call it fixed.
Loose and backstabbed connection repair
Many intermittent faults come down to a connection that was never tight, often a backstabbed outlet where the wire pushes into the back of the device instead of landing on the screw. We re-land those connections on the terminals so the circuit is solid and runs cool.
What waiting can cost you
A hot connection does not stay quiet
A loose or backstabbed terminal arcs and heats a little more each time the circuit draws load. Left alone, that heat scorches the device and the wire insulation, which turns a quick repair into a fire risk.
Guessing wastes money
Swapping an outlet, a breaker or a switch without finding the cause often leaves the fault in place and the symptom returns. Diagnosing first means you pay once for the right fix instead of replacing parts that were never the problem.
An open neutral can damage electronics
An open or shared neutral can push voltage too high on one circuit and too low on another, which flickers lights and can harm sensitive electronics. Finding and correcting the neutral protects the devices plugged into those circuits.
Our process
- 01
Symptom and history
We ask what you are seeing, when it started and what changed, because a fault that began after a storm or a remodel points us in a very different direction than one that has been creeping along for months.
- 02
Trace the circuit
We map the affected circuit and use a meter to measure voltage, check the neutral and ground, and narrow the problem to a single device, connection or run.
- 03
Confirm the root cause
We show you the actual fault, whether it is a backstabbed outlet, an overloaded circuit, a lost neutral or a failed breaker, so the repair targets the cause and not just the symptom.
- 04
Optional flat-rate repair price
Once the diagnostic fee has found the cause, you get a clear written price for the repair itself, and you decide whether to have us proceed. Nothing beyond the diagnosis happens until you approve it.
- 05
Repair
We correct the fault, re-land loose connections on their terminals, replace any failed device or breaker, and bring the circuit back up to code.
- 06
Test and verify
We load-test the circuit, confirm the symptom is gone, and check voltage and polarity so you know the repair actually holds.
What is included
Every troubleshooting & repair job from Magnify Electric includes the same standards, start to finish.
- A real diagnosis that traces the fault to its source before any part is replaced.
- Voltage, neutral and ground testing on the affected circuit with a meter.
- A plain explanation of what caused the problem and what the repair involves.
- Loose and backstabbed connections re-landed on the terminals, not just taped over.
- GFCI and AFCI protection tested and confirmed to hold after the repair.
- A complimentary 54-point safety inspection so we catch problems beyond the one you called about.
- Text-message updates and optional, flat-rate repair pricing you approve after we find the cause.
Cost factors
We give you a flat-rate price after we see the job. These are the things that move that number up or down.
Diagnosis time
An outlet that is dead because of a tripped GFCI is quick to find. An intermittent fault that only shows up when the AC cycles can take longer to trace, and the diagnosis time is the main driver.
Access to the fault
A loose connection at a reachable outlet is a fast repair. A break inside a wall, in an attic run or at a buried junction takes more work to reach and correct.
What the repair turns out to be
Re-landing a backstabbed outlet is a different job than replacing a failed breaker or separating circuits that were sharing a neutral. We give you the flat-rate price once we have found the cause.
We troubleshoot faults across Austin and the Hill Country, from 1970s and 1980s homes in Lakeway and Westlake where backstabbed outlets and tired connections are common, to lake properties around Lake Travis and Spicewood that see flickering and dead circuits after summer storms and lightning. After a storm or an outage on the Austin Energy or Pedernales Electric Co-op grid, we sort out what the weather left behind.

Chris and Caden did an amazing job installing my EV charger and helped assist me with other electrical questions I had around my house!! Very professional and kind. I highly recommend them!
Chris and Caden did a great job of installing a dedicated circuit and outlet for us. They were very thorough in checking out the existing circuit outlets and also patient with explaining everything before starting. I appreciated especially the quality of their work, their professionalism, and their willingness to throw in extra work where they saw fit at no charge. In short, I couldn’t be happier about the job they did.
Chris and Caden were awesome - they installed an entire new main panel and a new subpanel very effectively. We knew exactly what to expect at every step in the process, and now everything is up to code! If we need any additional electrical work, we will absolutely call Magnify Electric.
Trayvon is such a professional. He answers any and all questions. Does an amazing job in whatever is needed, and you’d never even know he had been here as he tidies up impeccably. He is our family’s electrician. I’d give 10 stars if able!
Felt lucky to have found Magnify Electric. Troubleshooting & repair questions, answered
I smell burning or see sparking at an outlet or panel. What should I do right now?
Treat it as an emergency. If it is safe to reach, turn off the breaker for that circuit at the panel, keep everyone away from the outlet or device, and do not use it. If you see flames, smoke or a hot, melting device, leave and call 911 first. Once the area is safe, call us at 512-731-0868 and we will find and repair the fault.
My breaker keeps tripping. Is the breaker bad or is it something else?
Usually the breaker is doing its job and tracing the circuit tells us why. The common causes are an overloaded circuit, a short, a ground fault or a loose connection somewhere on the run, and sometimes the breaker itself has worn out. We diagnose the cause first so the fix actually stops the tripping instead of masking it.
Why is one outlet or half my room dead when the main breaker is still on?
A dead outlet or a dead section often traces to a tripped GFCI upstream, a backstabbed connection that has loosened, or a break at another device on the same circuit. Half power at an outlet usually points to a lost neutral. We find the exact point in the circuit rather than just replacing the outlet in front of you.
My lights flicker and dim, especially when the AC comes on. Is that dangerous?
It can be, and it is worth checking. Flickering that tracks with a large load can come from a loose connection, an overloaded circuit, a failing device or an open neutral, and a loose connection in particular can heat up and become a fire risk. If flickering is paired with buzzing, a warm outlet or a burning smell, turn off that circuit and call us.
Our lights flickered and some outlets died after a storm. Is that related to the lightning?
Very likely. Storms and lightning around the Hill Country and the lakes can cause outages, voltage swings and surge events that leave behind tripped protection, failed devices and loose connections. We trace what the storm left and repair it. If the event itself was a surge, we can also talk about whole-home surge protection to limit the next one.
What is a nuisance GFCI or AFCI trip and why does it keep happening?
It is when the protection trips without an obvious fault in front of you. The common hidden causes are a shared neutral between circuits, moisture at an outdoor or bathroom device, or a device that has simply worn out. We test the line and load sides and separate shared neutrals so the protection holds without tripping on nothing.
Can you really find an intermittent problem that only happens sometimes?
Yes, that is the core of troubleshooting. We use the pattern of when it happens, the circuit map and meter readings to narrow it down, and we load-test to recreate the fault. Intermittent problems usually come from a connection that is loose enough to misbehave under load, and once we find it the repair is straightforward.
How do you charge for troubleshooting?
We charge a diagnostic fee to come out and trace the cause of the problem, since we cannot price a repair before we know what is actually wrong. Once we have found the cause, you get optional, flat-rate pricing for the repair and you decide whether to have us proceed. Financing and Magnify Protection Plan member savings are available.
