Ceiling fan installation in Austin, TX
A ceiling fan hangs over your head and moves all day through a Texas summer, so the box it mounts to matters as much as the fan. We mount every fan on a fan-rated support, balance it, and set up the controls, with a flat-rate price you approve before we start.
Ceiling fan installation covers swapping an old fan for a new one, adding a fan where one has never been, and fixing fans that wobble, hum or will not respond to the control. The part most homeowners do not see is the support: a ceiling fan has to hang from a fan-rated braced box, not a standard lighting box, because the constant motion will work a standard box loose over time. We confirm the box, size the downrod to your ceiling, mount and balance the fan, and set up the remote or wall control before we leave.
This is the right call if:
- You are replacing an old fan that wobbles, hums, or has stopped working.
- You want a fan where there has never been one and there is no box or wiring in the ceiling yet.
- Your fan hangs from a standard lighting box instead of a fan-rated braced box.
- You have a tall great-room or sloped ceiling that needs the right downrod and mount.
- You want a damp or wet-rated fan over a covered patio or porch.
- A fan runs but wobbles, and tightening the screws has not fixed it.
Ceiling fan installation options
Fan replacement on a fan-rated box
When a box is already in the ceiling, we confirm it is actually fan-rated before we hang anything new on it. A standard lighting box is only built to hold a light fixture, and the vibration of a spinning fan will loosen a standard box over time, so if yours is not rated we swap it for a braced fan box first. Then we mount, wire and balance the new fan.
Adding a brand-new fan location
If you want a fan in a room that has never had one, there is no box and no wiring in that spot. We run a circuit to the location, install a fan-rated braced box between the joists, and bring the control to the wall. For a larger new circuit from the panel, see our wiring page.
Downrods and mounts for tall or sloped ceilings
Great-room and vaulted ceilings common in Hill Country homes need a longer downrod so the fan sits at an effective height, and a sloped ceiling needs a sloped-ceiling mount or adapter. We measure the ceiling height and pitch and size the downrod so the fan clears the slope and moves air where you actually are.
Damp and wet-rated fans for patios
An outdoor fan has to be rated for the conditions it lives in: a damp-rated fan for a covered patio out of direct rain, a wet-rated fan where blowing rain can reach it. We install the correctly rated fan on outdoor-rated support so humidity and weather do not corrode a fan built for indoor use.
Wobble, balance and control setup
A fan that wobbles is usually out of balance, has a bent blade or blade holder, or is loose at the box, and we diagnose which before we start adjusting. We balance the blades, correct the mount, and set up the remote or program the wall control so each fan turns on the way you expect.
What waiting can cost you
A standard box will not hold a fan
A standard lighting box is not built to carry the weight and constant motion of a fan. Over months of running, the vibration backs the screws out and the box pulls away from the framing, and a falling fan is exactly what the fan-rated box requirement exists to prevent.
A wobble gets worse, not better
A small wobble puts load on the box and the mount every time the fan runs. Left alone it loosens the connection and wears the motor bearings, so what starts as a minor shake turns into a fan that has to come down.
An indoor fan on a patio corrodes
An indoor-rated fan mounted under a covered patio takes on humidity it was never sealed against. The motor and hardware corrode, the fan starts to rust and seize, and Central Texas summers run it hard enough to shorten its life quickly.
Our process
- 01
Confirm the box and the location
We check whether a fan-rated braced box is already in place, or plan where a box and circuit need to go for a new location. We also measure ceiling height and slope so we pick the right downrod and mount.
- 02
Flat-rate price before we start
Because a fan install is a known scope, you get one clear flat-rate price that covers the fan-rated box, downrod, mount and control setup, approved before any work begins.
- 03
Mount the fan-rated support
We install or verify a braced fan box anchored to the framing, and for a new location we run the circuit and bring the control to the wall.
- 04
Hang, wire and balance
We assemble the fan with the correct downrod and mount, wire it, and balance the blades so it runs smoothly with no wobble or hum.
- 05
Set up the control and verify
We pair the remote or set the wall control, test every speed and the light if the fan has one, and make sure direction and controls work the way you expect. For replacing the wall control device itself, see our switches page.
What is included
Every ceiling fan installation job from Magnify Electric includes the same standards, start to finish.
- A fan-rated braced box installed or verified so the fan has proper support.
- The right downrod and mount sized to your ceiling height and slope.
- Balanced blades so the fan runs without wobble or hum.
- Remote pairing or wall-control setup, tested at every speed.
- A damp or wet rating matched to the location for outdoor fans.
- A complimentary 54-point safety inspection of the fan boxes, switches, and nearby circuits.
- Cleanup and a quick walkthrough of how the fan and control work.
Cost factors
We give you a flat-rate price after we see the job. These are the things that move that number up or down.
Existing box vs. new location
Swapping a fan onto an existing fan-rated box is a smaller job than adding a fan where there is no box or wiring. A brand-new location means running a circuit and installing a braced box, which adds to the scope.
Ceiling height and access
A tall great-room or vaulted ceiling takes more equipment and time than a standard eight-foot ceiling, and a sloped ceiling needs a special mount. We factor the height and access into the price up front.
Indoor vs. damp or wet-rated
An outdoor fan for a covered patio needs a damp or wet rating and outdoor-rated support, which is a different fan and mount than a standard indoor install.
We install fans on the tall great-room and vaulted ceilings common in Hill Country homes around Spicewood, Lakeway and Bee Cave, add damp and wet-rated fans to the covered patios and outdoor living spaces people build for Lake Travis summers, and replace tired fans in older Lakeway and Westlake homes. A well-placed fan lets you run the AC a few degrees warmer and takes some of the summer cooling load off your system.

Chris and Caden did an amazing job installing my EV charger and helped assist me with other electrical questions I had around my house!! Very professional and kind. I highly recommend them!
Chris and Caden did a great job of installing a dedicated circuit and outlet for us. They were very thorough in checking out the existing circuit outlets and also patient with explaining everything before starting. I appreciated especially the quality of their work, their professionalism, and their willingness to throw in extra work where they saw fit at no charge. In short, I couldn’t be happier about the job they did.
Chris and Caden were awesome - they installed an entire new main panel and a new subpanel very effectively. We knew exactly what to expect at every step in the process, and now everything is up to code! If we need any additional electrical work, we will absolutely call Magnify Electric.
Trayvon is such a professional. He answers any and all questions. Does an amazing job in whatever is needed, and you’d never even know he had been here as he tidies up impeccably. He is our family’s electrician. I’d give 10 stars if able!
Felt lucky to have found Magnify Electric. Christian fixed the issue we were having with our hardwired smoke alarms, installed a whole-house surge protector, and fixed a longstanding light switch issue. He did everything with excellence and efficiency. He did a great job of communicating throughout the process. Thanks so much!
Showed as scheduled. Had to coordinate with PEC and everything went very smoothly. Christian was very professional and completed the job quickly. Very satisfied with the results. I would recommend them to do any electrical work in my home.
Ceiling fan installation questions, answered
Can you install a ceiling fan where I have never had one before?
Yes. When there is no fan in a room, there is no box or wiring in the ceiling for one, so we run a circuit to the spot, install a fan-rated braced box between the joists, and bring the control to the wall. If the new fan needs a larger circuit run from the panel, we handle that through our wiring service. You get a flat-rate price for the whole job before we start.
Why can't you just hang the fan on the box that is already there?
Because a standard lighting box is only built to hold a light fixture, not the weight and constant motion of a spinning fan. The vibration will loosen a standard box over time and the fan can eventually pull loose, which is why code requires a fan-rated braced box. If the box in your ceiling is not rated for a fan, we replace it with one that is before we hang anything.
My fan wobbles. Can that be fixed, or do I need a new one?
Most wobbles can be fixed without replacing the fan. The cause is usually an unbalanced set of blades, a bent blade or blade holder, or a mount that has worked loose at the box. We find which one it is, balance the blades, and tighten or correct the mount so it runs smoothly. If the motor or bearings are worn out, we will tell you and talk through replacement.
Can you put a fan on my covered patio?
Yes, as long as we use a fan rated for the location. A covered patio out of direct rain needs a damp-rated fan, and a spot where blowing rain can reach it needs a wet-rated fan, because an indoor fan will corrode and seize in Central Texas humidity. We install the correctly rated fan on outdoor-rated support so it holds up through the seasons.
I have very tall ceilings in my great room. Can you reach them?
Yes, tall and vaulted ceilings are common in Hill Country homes and we install fans on them regularly. We measure the height and any slope, then size the downrod so the fan hangs at an effective height to move air, and use a sloped-ceiling mount where the ceiling is pitched. The extra height and access are factored into your flat-rate price up front.
Can a ceiling fan really help with my cooling bill in the summer?
A fan does not cool the room, but it moves air across your skin so you feel cooler, which lets you set the thermostat a few degrees higher for the same comfort. Over an Austin summer that takes some of the cooling load off your AC during peak demand. Running fans only in rooms you are using is the way to get the benefit without wasting energy.
How does the remote or wall control get set up?
We pair the remote or program the wall control that came with your fan and test it at every speed, along with the light if the fan has one. If you want a different wall switch or dimmer for the fan, that device itself is covered on our switches and dimmers page. Either way we make sure the control works the way you expect before we leave.
How much does ceiling fan installation cost?
It depends on whether there is already a fan-rated box in place or we are adding a new location with a circuit and box, how tall and steep the ceiling is, and whether it is an indoor or outdoor-rated fan. We give you a flat-rate price after we see the spot, and we do not start until you have said yes to the price.
